Maintaining Pest Control In Summer

Summer pests can be a hassle to deal with in almost any environment, more so in the office. Warmer days bring out a whole range of different insects that can create an unhygienic environment to work in. In particular, flies and cockroaches cause the most havoc in buildings, but any pest in the office is difficult to work with.

Here are some preventative measures to start implementing now as we go into the summer months in South Africa.

Stopping Ants

Ants may not seem like a problem, but they can overtake your office before you know it. In summer, their hordes increase, resulting in them looking for food to take back to their nests. Ensuring they don’t enter your building is the best preventative measure to keep them out. Hence, encouraging employees to tidy up after eating and ensuring the office is cleaned daily by housekeeping will stop them from growing their colonies inside.

Preventing Flies

Flies are more than a hindrance in the office; they carry germs and bacteria to every surface they touch. They easily contaminate everything by regurgitating, making for an unsanitary and unpleasant office.  Using an air conditioner, having fans around the building and installing insect sprays can only do so much. Keep bins emptied, food items closed and windows shut after hours to reduce flies multiplying in the building.

Discouraging Cockroaches

As much as cockroaches are unsightly, they are also a nuisance to get rid of. Much like flies, they too carry around harmful bacteria such as Listeria, E.Coli and parasitic worms. They can easily get into small spaces, making them difficult to catch and build large nests without you realising it. The same measures apply here ‒ keeping bins empty and food items closed and inaccessible will help in deterring them. It is also advisable to do more drain cleaning leading up to summer to ensure no cockroaches are scurrying around in the pipes.

Deterring Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes may seem to be the less invasive of summer insects, but they are just as troublesome. In any setting, their bites can cause frustration, so your employees are likely to share the same sentiments in the office. Damp areas draw them in; thus your workplace must be sufficiently dry to deter them from flying in. If the issues continue to worsen, you may need to call out professional services to see if you have any plumbing leaks or standing water that is attracting them.

While any change in season can affect your pest control management, summer is more difficult to maintain. This is because insects have shorter breeding cycles due to the heat, meaning that they breed very quickly, and you can have a full infestation within a matter of days.
